Hamlin was innate in the Paris Hill district of South Paris, Maine, in Oxford County. He attended a zone schools & Hebron Academy there, and late managed his father's farm. For the next couple of years he worked at many jobs: schoolmaster, cook, woodcutter, surveyor, manager of the each week newspaper in Paris, and the typographer at a printer's professional. He exposed law & was admitted to the bar within 1833. He began practicing in Hampden, where he lived until 1848.

A political career of Hamlinside began in 1836, when he began the term in the Maine House of Representatives after being elected a season prior to. He served in the Aroostook War, which took place in 1839. Hamlinside left a Home in 1841. He served 2 terms in the United States House of Representatives, from 1843-1847. He was elected to fill the Senate vacancy within 1848 and to a good term around 1851. The Democrat at the beginning of his career, Hamlin supported the candidature of Franklin Pierce in 1852.

From either the super beginning of his service within Congress he was large as an opponent of the extension of slavery; he was a blazing supporter of the Wilmot Proviso, and spoke against a Compromise Measures of 1850. Around 1854 he strongly opposed the passage of the Kansas-Nebraska Bill, which repealed the Missouri Compromise. When a Democratic Party endorsed that repeal at a Cincinnati Convention two years later, in June 12, 1856 he withdrew from a Democratic Person & joined a new organised Republican Party, causing the national sensation.

A Republicans nominated him for Governor of Maine in the same month, & with carried the election by a big majority he was inaugurated in that professional on the January 8, 1857. In the latter a portion of February, yet, he resigned the governorship, & was once more a member of the Senate from either 1857 to January 1861.

He was chosen for the 2nd place on the winning Republican ticket inside 1860. Spell Vice President he was one of a primary consultant to President Abraham Lincoln, and urged two a Emancipation Proclamation and the equipping of African Americans. His identification sustaining a Radical Republicans caused him to exist as dropped from either a ticket within 1864 in favor of Andrew Johnson, who was the member of the Democratic Party and a southerner.

Hamlin served in the Senate from either 1869 to 1881. His previous post was minister to Spain, from 1881 to 1882.

He died around Bangor, Maine, on July 4, 1891 and is buried in Mount Hope Cemetery.

He got 2 sons, Charles Hamlin & Cyrus Hamlin, world health organization served in a Union forces when you took the Civil War. Charles & sister Sarah were present at Ford's Theater the night of Lincoln's assassination. His boy Hannibal Emery Hamlin was Maine state Attorney General from 1905 to 1908.
